THE SCIENCE

Our scaffolds and microcarriers allow you to focus on what consumers want most: cultivated meat that looks, feels and tastes like traditionally grown meat.

We are the first biomaterials developer to utilize milk-derived proteins as an input for scaffolds and microcarriers for cellular agriculture.

WHEY-BASED FORMULA

Burlington Bio’s scaffolds and microcarriers are comprised of a proprietary whey-based formula. Whey contains both proteins and lipids, providing a unique nutritional source that promotes cell proliferation. Unlike other inputs, whey allows for the customization of specific mechanical and structural properties of our hydrogels. By optimizing the porosity, stiffness, and hydrophilicity, our scaffolds and microcarriers provide customers further control over the taste-texture profile of their end product.

CUSTOMIZABLE HYDROGELS

  • Fit to scale: our hydrogel formula is compatible with most methods of additive manufacturing.

  • Structural control: our hydrogels can be manufactured as either scaffolds or microcarriers, offering a range of porosity, pore size, or microsphere diameters.

  • Mechanical control: by adjusting the stiffness, our hydrogels promote cellular differentiation and the development of different tissue types.

  • Nutritional value: the use of whey allows us to dial up the protein content of our hydrogels to fit your product and process.
